Most garden pest problems are far easier to manage caught early than after they've spread across a bed — but early signs are subtle enough that they're easy to miss without knowing what to look for.
Mealybugs
Small, white, cottony clusters usually found at leaf joints and new growth. Left unchecked they spread fast in Goa's humidity and weaken plants by feeding on sap, often leaving a sticky residue that then attracts sooty mould. Early infestations can often be wiped off manually or treated with a mild soap solution before they need anything stronger.
Scale insects
Small, flat, shell-like bumps on stems and the undersides of leaves, easy to mistake for a natural part of the plant at first glance. Like mealybugs, they feed on sap and can cause yellowing and leaf drop if the population grows unchecked.
Aphids
Clusters of small soft-bodied insects on new growth and flower buds, often in green or black. They multiply extremely fast and are a common cause of distorted new growth and sticky leaves. Natural predators like ladybirds help keep populations down if the garden isn't over-treated with broad pesticides that kill beneficial insects along with pests.
Whiteflies
Tiny white flying insects that scatter when a plant is disturbed — one of the easier pests to spot early simply because of that visible flight response. They cause similar sap-feeding damage to aphids and spread quickly between nearby plants.
Fungal issues that get mistaken for pests
Powdery mildew (a white, dusty coating on leaves) and leaf spot are fungal, not insect-related, but frequently get treated with the wrong products because they're misidentified as pest damage. Both thrive in Goa's humidity, especially in overcrowded plantings with poor airflow.

When to bring in a professional
