We get asked this on almost every design consultation: drip or sprinkler? The honest answer is that most gardens need both, applied to different zones.
Drip irrigation works best for
Planting beds, hedges, and individual trees or shrubs — anywhere water needs to go directly to the root zone without wetting foliage. It's also the more water-efficient option, which matters increasingly as borewell levels tighten in parts of Goa during the dry season.
Sprinklers work best for
Open lawn areas, where even coverage across a large surface matters more than precision at any single point. Trying to cover a lawn with drip lines alone is possible but rarely cost-effective compared to a well-zoned sprinkler layout.
The case for zoning rather than choosing one
A property with both lawn and planting beds almost always ends up with a hybrid system: sprinkler zones on timers for the lawn, drip zones for beds and specimen plants, all run off a single controller. This is standard practice for us on both residential and resort-scale installs.
What we actually recommend
Rather than picking a system off a checklist, we start with a site visit to map zones by plant type and sun exposure, then size the system to your water source — borewell capacity varies a lot property to property in Goa, and an undersized supply line will bottleneck even a well-designed system.
